How To Accelerate The Healing Of A Bone Fracture
To promote the absorption of calcium by the bones, it is important that we include foods rich in vitamin D in our diet, or that we obtain it from the sun
Our body has the ability to regenerate bone tissue naturally, although it is sometimes a slow process. The healing of a bone fracture, whether partial or complete, is a complex process whose speed and success will depend on each individual.
What can we do to speed up the healing of a bone fracture?
Some healthy habits, foods, or nutritional supplements can help us increase the number of new cells and blood vessels that will rebuild bone.
Comfrey, the plant for fractures
The name of this medicinal plant refers to the healing of wounds. It has important effects on all types of bruises and fractures, since it is a great tissue regenerator, but always applied externally because its internal use is toxic.
Anyway, we can also take it in its homeopathic form, known as Symphytum 15CH. The first day we will take 3 granules every two hours, under the tongue, and separated from foods and strong and menthol flavors (gum, toothpaste, etc.). The following days we will take 3 granules three times a day.
For its external application we have two options:
- We will prepare a poultice of green clay but, instead of using water, we will mix it with an infusion of comfrey. We will apply it for 30 minutes on the fractured area and we will do it, ideally, once a day.
- We can also prepare a paste by crushing the roots of the plant and applying it around the fracture. Once dry it will work in a similar way to a cast bandage.
Tabashir bamboo, pure silicon
Tabashir bamboo (Bambousa arundinacea) has a very high content of silicon, a mineral that, as we will see below, is essential to regenerate bones. It is a great remineralizer and is especially recommended for healing a bone fracture.
We can buy it in herbal and dietary stores.
A remineralizing diet
As important as what we apply externally is to eat in a balanced way, choosing especially foods that nourish our bones to facilitate regeneration and prompt healing of a bone fracture. We review the most important minerals that help in this process:
The calcium
Our body does not produce calcium, so we must obtain it through the foods we eat, such as:
- Milk and dairy derivatives.
- Raw and unsalted nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, chestnuts …)
- Black currant
- Figs
- Coconut
- Garlic
- Onion
- Apple
- Pear
- Mango
- Banana
- Avocado
Magnesium
Magnesium is necessary for many processes that our body performs, including helping to build bone mass. Some foods rich in magnesium are:
- Oatmeal
- Lettuce
- Asparagus
- Whole wheat
- Pumpkin
- Potato
- Peach
- Green peas
- Lentils
- Plums
- Nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts)
Potassium
Potassium is one of the minerals that our body needs to function normally. Eating foods rich in potassium is essential for good bone health :
- Legumes (chickpeas, peas, beans)
- Dried plums
- Apricots
- Banana
- Avocado
Silicon
On the other hand, silicon helps the formation of elastin and collagen, thus protecting bones and joints. We find it in:
- Spinach
- Integral rice
- Onion
- Whole oats
- Cucumber
- Leeks
- Beet
- Cheese
We also recommend taking liquid organic silicon, a supplement that helps restructure and heal a bone fracture and gives flexibility and movement to the joints.
In addition to these minerals, there are other nutrients that are also essential for bone regeneration:
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium and magnesium in the bones. The body produces it naturally when the skin is exposed directly to the sun, so we recommend sunbathing daily first thing in the morning or at dusk.
If we live in a not very sunny area, we can usually consume eggs and fatty fish (sardines, herring, salmon, tuna) or take the vitamin in supplement form.
Omega 3 acids
Present at:
- Blue fish
- Eggs
- Butter
- Raw and unsalted nuts
- Flax seeds
The protein
Protein isn’t just from meat, fish, and eggs. We also recommend these sources of plant protein:
- Vegetables
- Sprouted alfalfa
- Avocado
- Raw and unsalted nuts
- Spirulina
Be careful with these foods
These foods act precisely by stealing minerals from our body, so we must avoid them whenever possible, especially while recovering from the fracture.
- Excess animal protein.
- Alcohol.
- Tobacco.
- White sugar.
- Coffee.
- Fizzy and sugary drinks.
- Refined foods.
- Precooked foods.
- Fried
- Food with salt.
- The bran, as it inhibits the absorption of calcium. Yes we should eat whole foods, but we should avoid those products that have added fiber (cookies, bread, etc.), or take them separately from foods rich in calcium.
- Vegetables with oxalates (spinach, beets). We can also take them separately from foods rich in calcium.
As you have seen, we can prepare natural remedies that, due to the properties of their ingredients, help to restructure and heal a bone fracture.
